Trump won.
If you’re reading this, chances are that this was an outcome that you feared. There’s been plenty of anxiety this election cycle, especially in the light of a Supreme Court loaded with right-wing judges and all the reporting about Project 2025.
Times like these are incredibly uncertain, and with uncertainty comes despair and anguish. We understand all of this. We stand with you in these feelings.
However, what this means is that it is incredibly pressing, now more than ever, to fight back.
Before we discuss how we fight back, we first should look at what we’re up against.
Party Breakdowns
As of 9 PM CST on November 6, Republicans control the US senate with 52 out of 100 seats. 4 races have still yet to be called; based on current counts, Republicans will likely gain 2 more seats.
Over in the US House, Republicans currently have 205 seats while the Democrats have 189. There are still 41 races yet to be called. Based on current counts, Republicans could gain 18 more seats.
For comparison’s sake, before the 2024 election, Republicans had 49 out of 100 Senate seats and 222 out of 435 House seats.
In Kansas, Republicans currently control 30 out of 40 seats in the State Senate. The race for District 5 has not yet been called, but it seems likely that the Republican candidate will win. In the House, Republicans control 85 out of 125 seats. Of the remaining 5 races that have yet to be called, it is possible that the Republicans will win 3 addition seats.
Regardless of whether the Kansas Republicans win those seats, the Republicans have already gained a seat in the Senate and have maintained the 85 seats they had in the House.
What Comes Next?
Maybe this feels like game over. Maybe you’re wondering: what are we supposed to do against a state and federal government that is controlled by Republicans?
The good news is that the fight isn’t over. Not as long as we’re around.
If you would like more information about what to expect and how you can fight to protect trans Kansans, we invite you to join us at the Lawrence Public Library on Monday, November 11th starting at 6 PM for a community meeting & informational session.
Together, we will:
- Cover who’s in office
- Understand how Project 2025 may be implemented
- Share ideas, needs, and concerns regarding trans Kansans
- Begin our counterattack
We will provide masks for attendees to wear at this event.
This event will be livestreamed & filmed should technology be friendly with us. Check back for more information regarding the livestream link & later uploads.
In the meantime, please check out our Political Center for more information.
And remember: nothing will ever change if we don’t fight now. Now is better than ever to form community ties and protect each other.
These are frightening times that we live in. But anti-trans oppression is not guaranteed. We will not quietly accept our fate.
Onwards and upwards. We shall overcome.
