Who We Are
Trans Lawrence Coalition (TLC) is a trans-led organization that serves trans people in Lawrence, Kansas. We seek to promote trans political and social well-being through a variety of political campaigns and social events that focus primarily on the needs of trans people.
We welcome all trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and other gender-variant people to participate in our events. Cis allies are also invited to participate; we simply request that you respect trans voices when it comes to issues that impact us directly.
Our History
In April of 2023, the Kansas legislature voted to pass SB 180, the so-called “Women’s Bill of Rights.” SB 180, which legally defines trans people out of existence, was one of the five anti-trans laws that comprised an unprecedented attack on trans Kansans that year.
In response, trans people and our allies in Lawrence came together and formed the No SB 180 in Lawrence campaign. Our campaign made three demands: that the city of Lawrence not enforce SB 180; that the Lawrence police does not target trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people using SB 180; and that the Lawrence City Commission pass an ordinance protecting trans people in Lawrence from discriminatory state laws like SB 180. Together, we drafted Ordinance No. 9999, which went into effect in Lawrence on August 1, 2023.
Following the success of the No SB 180 in Lawrence campaign, we transitioned to Trans Lawrence Coalition to continue serving trans members of the Lawrence community. Among our other successes include the Stop SB 233 campaign, our Annual Clothing Swap event, various concerts, and other monthly events.
