What Happened?
On July 4, 2025, a group of eleven people traveled to the Prairieland ICE Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas to participate in an anti-ICE demonstration. Some people from this group set off fireworks, spray painted vehicles and structures, slashed tires, and broke a security camera. In response, police officers and ICE agents pursued the demonstrators. One of the demonstrators, fearing for the life of another, shot an ICE agent in the neck. The ICE agent was taken to the hospital and released the next day.
Since then, 22 people connected to the Prairieland demonstration either as participants or acquaintances have been charged with a variety of crimes. On June 23, eight of these defendants received prison sentences ranging from 30 to 100 years. The shortest of these sentences was given to Daniel Sanchez-Estra, a man who wasn’t at the demonstration but towed his wife’s car back home after she was arrested. Inside the car were a number of political zines. For doing this, he was found guilty of corrupting and concealing documents and conspiracy to conceal documents.
Why Are the Sentences So Long?
In September 2025, Trump formally declared “antifa” (short for anti-fascist) to be a terrorist organization. A few days afterwards, the National Security Presidential Memorandum (NSPM-7) was issued and defined antifa to be “anti-Americanism” and “Anti-Christian” and includes anyone who opposes capitalism, ICE & xenophobia, white supremacy & racism, and transphobia.
Additionally, in May, the White House released its latest counterterrorism strategy. It explicitly named anti-fascist, anarchist, and pro-transgender groups as domestic terrorism threats and pledged to “neutralize” them. The lengthy sentences of the Prairieland defendants reflects the federal government’s mission to crack down on leftists and to frame leftism as terrorism.
Furthermore, the trial is being held in the US District Court based out of the most conservative, pro-Trump part of Texas. Both the judge and jury sought to make examples out of the Prairieland defendants as a warning to others. That is to say that this outcome may not be replicated in other cases but is still worth noting for individuals in pro-Trump areas.
Political Takeaways
The Prairieland sentencing sets a dangerous precedent for the country. The federal government seeks to punish leftists’ freedom of speech and to use any means necessary to imprison leftists for as long as possible, such as we saw with Sanchez-Estra’s 30 year sentence for moving his wife’s car with zines inside of it.
Also worth noting is that 5 of the Prairieland defendants are trans; 3 have been convicted so far. Of those three, two are trans women who are being kept in men’s prison facilities and have been denied access to HRT. This is happening even after a federal court ruled earlier this month that trans women must be kept in women’s facilities.
We are currently in an era similar to that of the Red Scare. Anyone with political views that could be labeled “antifa” by the federal government’s definition must exercise caution with how they choose to express those views.
Safety Takeaways
- Do not say or write anything that could be understood as a threat or a conspiracy to commit violence. The prosecutors successfully used the demonstrators’ Signal group chat and Discord server to make their case. A discussion in Signal about bringing guns to intimidate officers was sufficient enough to prove the intent to commit violence.
- Do not engage in actions that are illegal and serve no purpose. Committing vandalism did not do anything to help immigrants within the facility. Rather, it set into motion the events that have now led to nearly two dozen activists being arrested and prevented from doing further political organizing that could benefit others. This is different from civil disobedience, such as the Freedom Riders in the Civil Rights Era, which is done intentionally to highlight injustice and propel change.
- Be incredibly mindful about how your actions can impact the people you care about and organize with. People who were not at the demonstration are facing decades in prison simply for being politically associated with the individuals. One impulsive action can legitimately take down an entire community or organization. This, in turn, only decreases safety and weakens the fight for liberation.
- Be intentional above all else. Don’t make rash decisions. Think through any and all political actions you take. Understand how severe the consequences can be if something goes wrong. Activism can be a life-or-death situation.
- Accept that the situation is unfair and use that to your advantage. Civil disobedience is effective because it highlights how unfair a situation is. As marginalized people and the political minority, laws exist largely to suppress us. It doesn’t matter if we think this is unfair; we will be punished regardless. Much of successful activism relies on thoughtful, intentional political actions that reveals the injustice at hand and gain sympathy and outrage from others.
A Word on Political Organizing & the Future
The laws and institutions in place are undoubtedly unfair and built upon a foundation rooted in oppression. Regardless of how one feels about them, political change of any sort — radical or not — takes decades to develop.
Currently, the left-wing in the United States is a politically weak faction. It is even weaker than it was during the Red Scares of the 1920s and 1950s. Leftists in the US are subject to obstacles and scrutiny that other political factions are not. As American fascism grows, the backlash against leftists will only intensify.
Because of this, any sort of left-wing political organizing is in a precarious position. The resistance is poorly organized; we do not have an organized political party to call home. We cannot afford to lose or jeopardize members of our communities. It is only with a strong base of support that any sort of monumental change can take place.
Our primary political goal must be to build this base of support through long-term dedication and a strategic vision. Discipline, patience, and intentionality are absolutely crucial to the success of this project. There are no shortcuts to liberation.
